GHP Teams Up With ASLM on Mentor Training

CLSI Global Health Partnerships (GHP) Senior International Program Manager, Patrick Mateta, collaborated with representatives from the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) on a five-day mentor training workshop held in Windhoek, Namibia, in June 2014. This was the first workshop co-facilitated by CLSI and ASLM.

Twenty participants from the Namibia Institute of Pathology attended the workshop. The goal was to develop a pool of mentors who will ensure ongoing skill transfer and sustainability of the laboratory strengthening programs in Namibia.

The workshop focused on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 15189:2012 standard (Medical laboratories — Requirements for quality and competence) requirements, Stepwise Laboratory Quality Improvement Process Towards Accreditation (SLIPTA) checklist requirements, and mentorship skills and methods. CLSI document, Quality Management System: A Model for Laboratory Services; Approved Guideline–Fourth Edition (QMS01-A4) was utilized in the course.

At the completion of the workshop, the facilitators aimed for the participants to:

  • Understand the ISO 15189:2012 standard requirements.
  • Understand the requirements of the SLIPTA checklist.
  • Identify attributes and competences of a mentor.
  • Plan and conduct a successful mentoring session.
  • Conduct laboratory audits for mentorship.
