CLSI Global Health Partnerships (GHP) Senior International Program Manager, Patrick Mateta, collaborated with representatives from the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) on a five-day mentor training workshop held in Windhoek, Namibia, in June 2014. This was the first workshop co-facilitated by CLSI and ASLM.
Twenty participants from the Namibia Institute of Pathology attended the workshop. The goal was to develop a pool of mentors who will ensure ongoing skill transfer and sustainability of the laboratory strengthening programs in Namibia.
The workshop focused on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 15189:2012 standard (Medical laboratories — Requirements for quality and competence) requirements, Stepwise Laboratory Quality Improvement Process Towards Accreditation (SLIPTA) checklist requirements, and mentorship skills and methods. CLSI document, Quality Management System: A Model for Laboratory Services; Approved Guideline–Fourth Edition (QMS01-A4) was utilized in the course.
