CLSI Publishes New Veterinary Medicine Standard and Supplement

Published by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute

Wayne, Pennsylvania, Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute has published VET01Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Disk and Dilution Susceptibility Tests for Bacteria Isolated From Animals and its supplement, VET08.

VET01 describes disk diffusion, as well as standard broth dilution (macrodilution and microdilution) and agar dilution, and includes a series of procedures to standardize the way the tests are performed. The performance, applications, and limitations of the current CLSI-recommended methods are also described. The supplemental information (VET08 tables) used with this standard represents the most current information for antimicrobial agent selection, interpretation, and quality control using the procedures standardized in VET01.

The tables presented in VET08 represent the most current information for drug selection, interpretation, and quality control using the procedures standardized in VET01. Users should replace previously published tables with these new tables. Changes in the tables since the previous editions appear in boldface type.

Michael T. Sweeney, Chairholder of VET01 said, “The VET01 Standard has been reorganized in the path of a laboratory’s work flow with step-action tables added, and includes easy-to-use color-coded chapters that thoroughly describe each method for performing antibiotic susceptibility testing. Additionally, the new VET08 Supplement contains the most up-to-date clinical breakpoints that are of significance to veterinary medicine. Both the updated VET01 Standard and the new VET08 Supplement are essential documents for any veterinary diagnostic or research laboratory.”
