A variety of laboratory techniques can be used to measure the in vitro susceptibility of bacteria to antimicrobial agents. CLSI standard VET01—Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Disk and Dilution Susceptibility Tests for Bacteria Isolated From Animals, 5th edition, and its supplement, VET08, describe the standard agar disk diffusion method, as well as standard broth dilution (macrodilution and microdilution) and agar dilution techniques.

These documents include procedures designed to standardize antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) performance. As more veterinary-specific information became available for drug selection, interpretation, and quality control, changes were incorporated into the supplement. This webinar will focus on the major changes in the recently published VET01 and VET08 standards, communicate upcoming changes that may be found in future editions of these documents, and answer questions from the participants related to standardized methods and procedures for AST.

Objectives:

  • Discuss CLSI document VET01, 5th ed., and its supplement, VET08, 4th ed., and how they improve veterinary AST.
  • Identify the procedures and applications of the various methods recommended by CLSI for AST.
  • Describe the changes made to the supplement and the importance of interpreting results, based on drug selection, for better animal care.
