CLSI Board President Dr. James Nichols recognized as recipient of 2025 IFCC Award for Distinguished Contributions in Education

Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute is thrilled to celebrate CLSI Board President Dr. James Nichols, for his recognition as recipient of the 2025 IFCC Award for Distinguished Contributions in Education.

Sponsored by Abbott Laboratories and presented by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC), this prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of educational material, improving training and education programs globally, and advancing the field of laboratory medicine.

A long-standing leader on the CLSI Board of Directors, Dr. Nichols is a professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Before joining Vanderbilt, he served as a clinical chemist at Johns Hopkins University Medical Institutions in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Nichols is a board-certified clinical chemist and toxicologist with a career that has encompassed education, research, and clinical service across various scientific fields, particularly point-of-care testing.

Dr. Nichols has dedicated his career to educating and training the next generation of clinical chemists, students, residents, and fellows. His teaching and mentorship have had a transformative impact on the careers of countless experts, many of whom have gone on to become influential leaders, educators, and researchers in the field of laboratory medicine.

“As laboratorians, we are all involved in education to improve the quality of test results. POCT and quality has always been my passion, and I’ve mentored students, given presentations, and consulted with many clinicians to ensure appropriate test utilization that optimizes patient care,” Dr. Nichols said.
