CLSI M48 | Laboratory Detection and Identification of Mycobacteria, 3rd Edition
CLSI is seeking subject matter experts to assist with the revision of CLSI M48 | Laboratory Detection and Identification of Mycobacteria, 2nd Edition, providing guidance for testing patients with suspected mycobacterial infections.
This standard covers:
- Patient specimen collection, preservation, and transport
- Procedures for detecting mycobacteria directly in specimens using microscopy and amplification techniques
- Optimal recovery of mycobacteria from patient specimens
- Identification of mycobacterial species by phenotypic and genotypic laboratory methods
The document is intended for medical and public health laboratories performing procedures for identifying mycobacteria from patient specimens. Note: Mycobacterial susceptibility testing is not included in this guideline.
We are specifically looking for volunteers with:
Knowledge of and/or experience with laboratory detection and identification of mycobacteria.
Expertise in mycobacteria testing in the medical or public health laboratory.
- Expertise in regulatory and accreditation considerations for detection and identification of mycobacteria.
Representatives from the professions, government, and industry constituencies are sought.

- Drafting of Document: December 2025 - October 2026
- Voting and Commenting Period: May 2027 - August 2027
