We’re celebrating Public Health Laboratory Awareness this September. To find out more about why public health laboratories are so important to all our lives, we spoke with Victor Waddell, PhD, MS, CLSI’s Board President, and Bureau Chief of the Arizona State Public Health Laboratory.

In 1963, as a result of a discovery by Dr. Robert Guthrie, newborns could finally be screened and receive treatment for a disease before symptoms appeared. Dr. Guthrie and his colleague published a paper outlining their discovery.

Our Vice President of Standards and Quality, Jen Adams, recently celebrated her 25th anniversary with CLSI. Jen’s unique experience in the world of standards, particularly medical laboratory standards, has made her an invaluable asset to CLSI throughout the years. We celebrate Jen’s contributions to CLSI and the global standards community.

The end of the federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) on May 11, 2023 means that medical laboratories and device manufacturers will need to adjust their reporting requirements. During the PHE, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had the authority to require lab tests for COVID-19 be reported to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This reporting requirement is no longer in effect.

During CLSI’s latest member webinar, Expanding CLSI Involvement at Your Organization, member delegate Victoria Petrides, MS, Program Manager, Technical Design Quality from Abbott discussed how Abbott set up a CLSI Intelligence Team to increase volunteer involvement. Some of the key points from the webinar included the advantages of expanded CLSI involvement, the challenges faced by Abbott before the formation of the CLSI Intelligence Team, and a roadmap to expanding CLSI involvement at your organization.

To acknowledge the work done by phlebotomists, the Registered Phlebotomy Technicians (RPT) and American Medical Technologists (AMT) have designated February 14-18, 2022, as National Phlebotomists Recognition Week (NPRW).
