CLSI is pleased to introduce Dr. Aleksei (Alex) Tikhonov, PhD, cancer researcher, bioanalytical scientist, and a CLSI volunteer for over two years.

We spoke with Alex about what being a CLSI volunteer means to him, the impact of contributing to global laboratory standards, and how others can get involved in this incredible community of subject-matter experts committed to advancing laboratory testing quality worldwide.

What motivated you to volunteer with CLSI?

I’ve always been driven by a passion to advance global health care, particularly in areas where unmet needs exist. CLSI’s mission—to develop practical, unbiased guidelines that transcend borders—immediately resonated with me. As someone with experience spanning academia, industry, and regulatory work, I saw an opportunity to contribute my unique perspective to something truly impactful. What excites me most is how CLSI doesn’t just include diverse voices; it actively seeks and values them. Here, I’m not just another volunteer; I’m helping shape standards that improve patient care worldwide.

How has CLSI impacted your growth?

My involvement with committees like EP49, QMS30, and EP24 has been transformative. Collaborating with this brilliant community—academics, industry leaders (from IVD and pharma), regulatory experts, and lab professionals—has sharpened my ability to think critically and work across disciplines. These interactions haven’t just expanded my technical knowledge; they’ve influenced how I approach problems, mentor others, and design clinical trials and studies. Applying CLSI’s frameworks in my daily work has made my contributions more robust and globally relevant.

Can you share a standout moment?

Working on the first edition of EP49 stands out as a career highlight. This groundbreaking guideline, which establishes clinical validity for lab tests, required our team to tackle complex concepts and distill them into actionable recommendations using best practices. What amazed me was how we harmonized diverse perspectives—each draft reflected rigorous debate, scientific integrity, and a shared commitment to end-users. Knowing this document will soon help health care professionals, scientists, and developers worldwide navigate clinical, scientific and regulatory challenges is incredibly fulfilling.

Why does CLSI matter to the field?

CLSI fills a unique niche: it bridges the gap between theory and practice. Its guidelines don’t just define requirements—they offer actionable examples, turning ambiguity into clarity. In a field where reproducibility and patient outcomes are paramount, CLSI’s work is indispensable.

What would you tell potential volunteers?

Don’t hesitate—join us! Whether you’re a seasoned expert or just starting out, CLSI offers a rare opportunity to grow alongside passionate peers, tackle real-world challenges, and leave a lasting legacy. The collaborative energy here is contagious, and every contribution matters.

I’m profoundly grateful for my journey with CLSI, especially the chance to shape EP49. To anyone considering volunteering: Your perspective can drive change. And in the end, that’s what makes this experience so rewarding.
