Clinical laboratory testing — Criteria for acceptable lots of dehydrated Mueller-Hinton agar and broth for antimicrobial susceptibility testing

This technical specification defines the physical properties and performance criteria for dehydrated Mueller-Hinton broth (dMHB) and Mueller-Hinton agar (dMHA), ensuring consistency in antimicrobial susceptibility testing. It provides manufacturers with guidelines to assess production lot performance, making these media suitable for use by laboratories and in vitro susceptibility testing device manufacturers. While dMHA can be used for MIC determination using the agar dilution method or the gradient diffusion method, this document focuses on performance testing using the disc diffusion methodology as described by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST).

This document does not cover supplements, such as blood or blood products, added to the medium to support the growth of fastidious bacteria. Such additives are introduced after the dehydrated medium is prepared in its liquid state as a final product and fall outside the scope of this technical specification.
