Subcommittees

What is a Subcommittee?

Subcommittees are responsible for two or more related documents in a topic area. They write draft documents, evaluate and respond to comments on content throughout the document development process, conduct scheduled document reviews, and may be responsible for continual revision of certain documents. CLSI has established subcommittees in the following areas:

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) Subcommittee

The AST Subcommittee provides useful information to laboratories, enabling them to advise clinicians in the selection of appropriate antimicrobial therapy in response to bacteria. This subcommittee operates through a network of AST Working Groups.

Antifungal Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee (AFUNG)

The Antifungal Subcommittee collaborates to develop standards and guidelines that promote accurate antifungal susceptibility testing and appropriate reporting. This subcommittee operates through a number of Antifungal Working Groups.

Veterinary Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (VAST) Subcommittee

The VAST Subcommittee collaborates to develop and promote performance standards, breakpoints, and interpretive categories for in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria isolated from animals. The VAST Subcommittee operates through a number of AST & VAST Working Groups.

What Can I Expect as a Committee Volunteer?

Committee volunteers meet regularly—in person and via conference call—throughout the development process to review the draft document, discuss and resolve issues related to the document's content, and to ensure the committee is on schedule with respect to the document development timeline.

Once the draft is finalized by the committee, it is circulated for Proposed Draft review and vote by the committee, the responsible expert panel, and the CLSI member delegates. After the vote, the committee reviews and responds to all comments received. The Final Draft document is then prepared and submitted to the Consensus Council for review and approval. Once approved, the document is prepared for publication.

On average, it takes 24 months to complete a CLSI document. As a committee volunteer, you are asked to commit to participating for the duration of the project.

What are my duties as a volunteer?

Volunteers provide research support, review data, discuss technical issues, and work on assignments that help create or revise the subcommittee's library of documents.

What positions are available?

Titles and experience levels are provided below for a subcommittee. CLSI invites volunteers from varied backgrounds and different levels of experience to participate in different roles.

*Position has voting rights on the committee.

How often do subcommittees meet?

Subcommittee volunteers meet face-to-face once or twice a year and may meet virtually several times throughout the year. Subcommittees typically meet in person once or twice annually, during January and/or June Committees Weeks. There is no attendance fee for Committees Week meetings, but registration is required. Your CLSI project manager will notify you of the planned and expected meetings and will provide announcements, agendas, and other pertinent materials before each meeting.
