During Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, we celebrate and recognize these professionals who have dedicated their careers, and even their lives, to a healthier world, through reliable testing and equitable health care around the globe.
Established in 1975, Medical Laboratories Professional Week, originally known as National Laboratory Week (NMLW), was founded by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS). This celebration, now in its 50th year, was created to honor the vital contributions of medical laboratory professionals and to raise public awareness for the critical role they play in patient care. Over the years, other organizations, including Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), have become collaborative partners with ASCLS to help coordinate events and expand awareness surrounding the observance.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 70% of medical decisions rely on laboratory data. Medical laboratory professionals are critical to patient care, performing the vital tests that support disease diagnosis and monitoring. Physicians depend on the accuracy and precision of lab results to develop effective treatment plans. Whether those tests are molecular, diagnostic, or microbiological, laboratorians remain steadfast in delivering accurate, timely information that shapes clinical decisions and improves outcomes, truly making them the unsung heroes of the medical world.
Laboratory professionals dedicate their lives to their career and making the world a healthier place for all. With constant pending regulatory change, laboratorians stay one step ahead by diligently working to adapt through innovation and partnership, while still supporting and enhancing patient care with rigor and diligence. They’re always a step ahead with advancements in technology, harnessing educational tools and developed standards, like those offered by CLSI, to continue pushing science and health care forward.
